The issue of gay Marriage is important to a large part
of our community. The issue of Equality should
concern us all, as Americans. Whenever there is a
group of people being singled out and made to feel
second class we must all get active and involved.
Regardless of your lifestyle or moral take on it,
freedom and equality is fundamental and god given,
American insured. There is a movement, encouraged by
the president and his right wing party to use the
Constitution that insures all our freedoms to limit
the freedoms of same sex life partners from getting
married. This cannot and will not happen with your
help. Not only are you insuring the rights of your
gay friends today, but the freedoms of your sons and
daughters, sisters and brothers, cousins, nephews,
nieces, friends and coworkers for the very far
future. You are not only weighing in on the issue of
gay marriage but on equality for all Mercian
citizens. Send a message to those that want to
exclude this group or that group, that there is no
room in the constitution or in our
governments policy for action that would limit in
anyway or do away with any freedom afforded to some
but not all.
Here
are some things you can do to help:
The Number One Priority is
Defeating the proposed Federal Marriage Amendment in
Congress. If this devastating legislation passes
we stand to lose all we have won and spending
countless years trying to gain it back. To accomplish
this victory we need every LGBT community member,
all of our fair-minded allies, each of our
family members and non-LGBT friends to write, email,
and call Congress and let them know we will not
support legislators who discriminate in this fashion.
Weigh
in on every poll. I will try to keep them posted here
for a quick link. Through the polls we can send a
collective voice to lawmakers and the rest of the
nation that we want equality and will settle for
nothing less, and that we want it expeditiously.
The Number Two Priority is
Educating the "moveable middle"; the average,
poorly informed American, who may not feel comfortable
with same-sex marriage but also does not like
discrimination. Each of them need to be educated about
the incredible discrimination imposed by our marriage
laws and the more than 1,000 rights loving, committed
same-sex couples and families are denied. To
accomplish this we need our community members and
their friends reaching out to the average citizens, to
their families, to their work colleagues, to their
friends and educating them. We need Dear Mom and Dad
letters, we need to find the courage to bring the
dialogue home to the people who know us and know our
relationships! We need them to carry our message and
help us fight! Talk Talk Talk it's so important to
share your thoughts even with those that may be
indifferent or even against what you believe. From
your mouth might come something that they can
understand and empathize with
Finally, we also need to
stay responsive to local concerns and examples of
injustice. Today we need to address the San Diego
Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk Gregory Smith who
continues to say that he is "unaware" of any
"significant number" of same-sex couples in San Diego
demanding that he stop discriminating against them in
the issuance of marriage licenses. In several media
comments he has indicated that his office has heard
from "only a few."
Today we need to change
those numbers and let Mr. Smith know that there
are thousands of San Diegans who believe that he is
operating his office in an unjust, unconstitutional,
and discriminatory fashion.
Here's what we need to do
TODAY.
Call, email, or write (or
all three) Mr. Gregory Smith

SAMPLE: Mr. Smith,
I am writing today to express
my disappointment in your continuing discriminatory
actions. Both our State and Federal Constitutions
provide all Americans with equal protection under the
law and your continuing refusal to be guided by these
principles is wrong. Loving and committed same-sex
couples deserve all of the rights that are given to
heterosexual couples and, as an elected official, I do
not believe you are permitted to ignore these
constitutional principles. Stop the discrimination and
begin to issue licenses fairly TODAY.
Sincerely,
While at the computer or desk
draw up a letter to President Bush and let him know
that the more "right" he gets the more wrong he is.
